Styrene,the chemical compound involved in gas leak near Visakhapatnam
11 people died and over 1,000 were hospitalised due to gas leak at a chemical plant of LG Polymers in the city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
- What is Styrene?
Styrene,chemically know as ethylbenzene,vinylbenzene and phenylethene is a synthetic chemical which is a colourless liquid.It is highly inflammable and releases a poisonous gas when burnt.This toxic produces a sweet smell,however,if produces in a large amount,it produces a less pleasant odour.It is used in production of polystyrene plastics,fibre glass and rubber.
- How dangerous it is?
Styrene can cause severe irritation to eyes and mucous membrane.It can also have effect on gastro-intestinal organs.Chronic exposure leads to effects on Central Nervous System such as headache, depression,fatigue, weakness,hearing loss and CNS dysfunction.
